I have my own line of custom rods called the Warlock Musky Stix which are made for me by BACKWOODS Premium Rods here in Canada.
They are incredible for working any baits that require the angler to impart action. Very fast action blanks and light as a feather. The strongest musky blanks you will probably ever find...Rainshadow high strain/high modulous graphite rated for up to 50lb test.
I use these rods for working my heavy gliders and they are the best fishing tool I've ever had the pleasure of owning. Can't believe what a huge difference the right rod can really make.

My preference for 'walk the dog' top waters is to use my jerkbait rod (6'6" MH) with a left hand retrieve reel. I just find that works better for me than using one of my longer rods. I find using a longer rod for these baits I don't get a cadence that I'm happy with. _________________ formerly known as esox34..and probably exagerrating by a couple of inches. |

| I am the same as teninch, I use either my 6'9" St. Croix jerkbait rod or a 7' Compre. For straight line topwaters I use a 7'6" and if I had an 8' I would use it. |

My sincere apologies if that's the impression I've given.
I am super busy with my job and don't get to fish or post as much as I would like to. I actually do believe that my rods are the finest tool for what you were asking about and thought I should tell you about them.
I do have a link back to this fantastic website from mine as a small token of my support. _________________ www.muskysnax.com |

I'm pretty sure that Andy would appreciate it if the personal attacks stop right here before they even get started. Striker has been kind enough to link to my website as I have done to his.
I do what I can to help support the people that support me. Those people know who they are and what I have done in return.
Now back to the topic at hand...anyone else have any rods they wish to mention? _________________ www.muskysnax.com |

I don't think there have been any attacks...Mike, what I was looking for was a rod type, not brand. I'm pretty loyal to the St Croix line of musky rods, and Loomis for anything else. _________________ Dax Jacklin |

I would like to add that I also prefer the shorter rods for working walk the dog type top waters and longer ones for prop baits.
What makes a great rod for walk the dog baits is a very stiff backbone and a fast tip. I like flex only in the top third of the rod. _________________ www.muskysnax.com |

Hi Dax,
I have a St. Croix Avid 7'6" 2 to 6 oz. that I use for everything from twitching big crank to Jerkbaits and topwater. St. Croix has a pretty cool rod selector feature on their site, here is the link; http://stcroixrods.com/rodselector/default.asp
hope this helps you out, Jeff |

PT..my preference,
Walking the dog rod involves 2 things:
1. should be stiff rod(jerk bait rod), all pulls or jerks should directly move the bait meaning no absorbtion on the tip or stretching of the line basicall no delays...you want instant reaction!!!
2.the rod length at 6-oclock position on your downwards pull should be above the water..using a longer rod that rides below the water line has a larger radius which makes the head of the glide bait dive down into the water(This WHAT YOU DO NOT WANT!!)....a glide bait usually runs horizontal so the most useful part of your pull or jerk is the last 20 degrees( 5-7 o'clock'ish) because its the only time where your bait and rod tip are close to being coplaner. try out some of your buddies rods prior to your purchase because all boats displace differently (deck height above the water). good luck...my best guess for your deep v lund/ being 5'10 .... 6'9 premiere or avid St.croix..
3. i know i said 2 things but you need a stiff jerk bait leader for sure. match the lenght of lure.. _________________
